Reality Bytes: Vocal reality shows invade
Reality TV singing competitions are jumping to the next level. The shows are bringing in major celebrity judges, changing up the rules – and breaking others.
Let the vocal wars begin!
‘The Voice’
NBC’s pimping the hell out of its new singing contest, “The Voice.”
OK, we get the message — “The Voice” debuts Tuesday on NBC.
Get ready, ’cause the show’s coaches — Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Maroon 5′s Adam Levine and country music star Blake Shelton — are about to turn the tables on reality talent shows.
For starters, the singing pros will judge the talent with their backs turned. After seeing the crop of characters that show up at “American Idol” auditions, this might not be a bad idea.
“The Voice” also adds a new twist to the talent game. The coaches will compete against each other to become the contestants’ mentors.
Are you confused yet?
“The Voice” will either rejuvenate reality talent shows or go down in flames.
Find out Tuesday on NBC.
Abrams gives J-Lo a smooch
CU music student Casey Abrams can’t stay out of the “American Idol” spotlight. Between his hospital visits and his “Idol” super save, the singer’s racking up viewers’ votes.
Yes, Abrams made “American Idol” news, once again.
Last week, the singer belted out Maroon Five’s “Harder to Breathe.” The gutsy performer even went up to the judge’s table and kissed Jennifer Lopez!
However, judge Steven Tyler stole the show when he told Abrams how great he was — using the F-bomb.
The mayhem worked, because Abrams was the first singer voted “safe” on last week’s results’ show.
So, what’s Abrams going do for an encore?
Carey hits the tube
“American Idol” signed Jennifer Lopez, “The Voice” landed Christina Aguilera — and the “X Factor” just scored Mariah Carey.
Get ready for the battle of the diva reality judges.
Simon Cowell knew he was going to have to go big or go home, so he asked Carey to join his “X Factor” singing competition.
Cowell’s being very coy about Carey’s role on “X Factor.” Will she be a judge or play another part of the show?
Stay tuned.
‘Platinum Hit’
Now Bravo’s getting into the vocal wars, as the cable channel’s debuting “Platinum Hit” on May 30.
“Platinum Hit” will feature musicians that live together and compete in songwriting contests. We’re not sure if the show we’ll be more “Big Brother” or “American Idol,” but the winner will score $100,000 and a record deal.
Former “American Idol” judge Kara DioGuardi and singer Jewel will judge the contestants.
