The Five Heartbeats: 20 Years Later

Twenty years ago this week (March 29), ‘The Five Heartbeats’ was released in theaters.

Directed by Robert Townsend with a script written by Townsend and Keenen Ivory Wayans, the film starred Townsend, Michael Wright, Harry J. Lennix, Leon, Tico Wells, Diahann Carroll, John Canada Terrell, Harold Nicholas, Hawthorne James, Chuck Patterson, Troy Beyer, Roy Fegan, Carla Brothers, Paul Benjamin, Theresa Randle and Tressa Thomas.

Set in the ’60s, when so many musical groups were thriving, the story centers around a quintet of hopeful young African-American men who form an amateur vocal group called The Five Heartbeats.

TV Helmer Ernest Dickerson Signs with Verve

Veteran TV director Ernest R. Dickerson has signed with Verves new lit agent/partner, Amy Retzinger. Dickerson recently won a NAACP Image Award for directing an episode of HBOs Treme. Dickerson won the award for Outstanding Directing in a Dramatic Series for the second-season episode “Do Watcha Wanna.” He has also has directed multiple episodes of Dexter and The Walking Dead.

Queen Latifah, Harry Belafonte chosen for Evansville’s Celebration of Diversity Distinguished Lecture Series

EVANSVILLE — Performers Queen Latifah and Harry Belafonte are scheduled to speak in Evansville this year as part of the city’s Celebration of Diversity Distinguished Lecture Series. Both of the free lectures will be in The Aiken Theatre at The Centre Downtown.

Good red sauce bodes well for Gerardi’s

The special is available all night Tuesday through Friday and again on Sunday and then as an early bird special if you’re seated by 5:45 on Saturday night.

Gerardi’s Caf has an intimate dining room with a brick fireplace, red walls and a tin ceiling. There’s a combination of wooden tables and cozy booths with throw pillows. Tables are all covered with white linen tablecloths and topped with candles and fresh flowers. The overall effect is both elegant and comfortable and the service was friendly.

We began with cocktails. The cucumber martini ($8.50) was a real standout. Made with Svedka vodka, a splash of dry vermouth and muddled cucumber slices, it was light and refreshing.
